Build Your Own Personal AI Writer (The Step-by-Step Guide Most People Won’t Share)
I’ve been building custom GPTs for months now, and one question keeps coming up: “How do you get AI to write in YOUR voice?”
This isn’t just about having AI help you write – it’s about having AI that writes exactly like you would. The difference is massive, especially when you’re busy but still want to maintain your authentic presence online.
I’ve developed a straightforward method for creating a personal AI writer, and today I’m pulling back the curtain on exactly how to do it yourself.
Why Your Own AI Writer Changes Everything
Before we dive into the how-to, let’s quickly cover why this matters:
- You can drastically increase your content output without sacrificing your authentic voice
- You can overcome writer’s block by asking your AI to draft something in your style
- You can maintain consistency in your communications even when you’re stretched thin
The key here is that we’re not trying to replace your writing – we’re trying to extend your capacity while maintaining what makes your writing uniquely yours.
The 5-Step Process to Build Your Personal AI Writer
Here’s the exact process I used to create my own personal writer. Follow these steps and you’ll have your own in under an hour (plus waiting time for LinkedIn).
Step 1: Gather Your Writing Samples
You need to give the AI examples of your writing, and lots of them. For me, LinkedIn posts were the perfect source since that’s where I do most of my writing. Here’s how to download yours:
- Go to LinkedIn and click on your profile in the upper right corner
- Select “Settings & Privacy”
- Go to “Data Privacy” on the left menu
- Click on “Get a copy of your data” on the right
- Select “Download larger data archive” and click “Request archive”
LinkedIn will take a couple of days to prepare your data, so be patient. When it’s ready, you’ll get a CSV file with all your posts.
Pro tip: If you write primarily on other platforms, collect 20-30 samples of your writing from there instead. Blog posts, newsletters, even emails can work.
Step 2: Create a Writing Style Analysis Framework
This is where most people go wrong. They just dump their writing into AI and hope it figures out their style. But there’s a better way.
Go to ChatGPT and use this exact prompt:
“You are an expert writer and teacher. Can you outline what should be included in a writing file that would help you write in my voice?”
ChatGPT will generate a comprehensive outline covering things like:
- Personal writing style
- Tone and voice
- Language and vocabulary
- Structure preferences
- Themes and topics
- Audience considerations
Step 3: Have AI Analyze Your Writing Style
Now, open a fresh ChatGPT window and use this prompt:
“You are an expert writer and teacher. Please analyze my LinkedIn post CSV file and create a writing profile for me based on the following outline:”
Then paste in the outline from Step 2 and upload your CSV file from LinkedIn.
ChatGPT will analyze your writing and create a detailed profile of your style. This is fascinating – you’ll learn things about your own writing that you never consciously realized!
Step 4: Convert the Analysis into Instructions
Next, we need to transform this analysis into instructions for your custom GPT. Ask ChatGPT:
“Now rewrite this as instructions for a custom GPT to write as me.”
This changes statements like “Your style is informative yet casual” into commands like “Adopt an informative yet casual writing style.”
Step 5: Create Your Custom GPT
Now we’ll build the actual custom GPT:
- Go to the GPT builder (click “Create” in the upper right of the ChatGPT interface)
- Skip the guided creation and go directly to “Configure”
- Name your GPT and add a profile picture (I used my actual photo)
- In the instructions field, start with: “You are my personal expert copywriter. Use the following guidelines to write as [your name]:”
- Paste in your rewritten style guidelines from Step 4
- Add additional rules like “Always write in the first person” and “Never use complex words when simpler words will do”
- Upload your original writing samples in the Knowledge section
And that’s it! You now have a custom GPT that writes remarkably like you.
Making the Most of Your Personal AI Writer
Here are some ways I’ve been using my AI writer:
- Drafting LinkedIn posts when I have an idea but limited time
- Creating first drafts of email responses that I can then personalize
- Overcoming writer’s block by asking it to start a piece for me
- Rewriting content from others in my voice so it feels more natural
The key is to remember that this is a tool to amplify your voice, not replace it. I still review and edit everything before it goes out, but starting with content that already sounds like me saves tremendous time.
Why This Matters Now More Than Ever
As AI becomes more integrated into marketing workflows, the people who can maintain their authentic voice while leveraging AI’s efficiency will have a massive advantage.
Your personal AI writer isn’t just a productivity hack – it’s a competitive edge in a world where everyone is using the same generic AI tools.
