My Full Story

Here’s a brief summary of my journey into marketing, automation, and AI.

The Ultimate Marketer

The room roared. Thousands of marketers packed the ballroom of a luxury resort in Scottsdale, Arizona, eyes fixed on the stage where three marketers battled for the coveted title of “Ultimate Marketer” at Infusionsoft’s user conference. It was 2012—digital marketing’s Wild West era—and witnessing these masters blend creativity with cutting-edge technology ignited something inside me.

Could I, Dan Sanchez, ever achieve that level of mastery?

Determined, I dove into digital marketing headfirst, devouring books by Seth Godin, John Jantsch, and Joel Comm, mastering AdWords, building WordPress sites, and optimizing landing pages. By the time I stepped into my role at Bethany Global University, I felt confident in my marketing skills, having led successful campaigns and achieving results far beyond our modest team’s size.

However, nothing could have prepared me for the challenges—and opportunities—that awaited at Bethany.

Building the Machine at Bethany Global University

When I first stepped into my role at Bethany Global University, I was hired as the director of marketing—but in reality, I was the marketing department (A department of one). The university had potential, but its marketing was lackluster, and every marketing-related task landed squarely on my desk.

I was constantly overwhelmed, prioritizing urgent tasks while important ones slipped through the cracks. Faculty requests piled up, and I became the perpetual “no machine,” rejecting good ideas simply due to bandwidth limitations.

Realizing the opportunity within the work college model—where students worked 15 hours weekly—I built a system from scratch. Starting with one student handling basic tasks, the concept quickly scaled into a robust team of 24 student workers and three full-time staff.

I created systems for onboarding, training, and management that transformed this student workforce into a sophisticated marketing engine. Combined with Infusionsoft, our modest team and tiny budget could run circles around colleges ten times our size.

The results were extraordinary. We tripled enrollment, launched impactful campaigns, and even developed a dedicated media department. Yet, challenges persisted—every August, my student team vanished, leaving me with just my staff. Each September, onboarding a fresh group became a repetitive, exhausting task. These bottlenecks were inevitable—until AI emerged as a potential game-changer, offering round-the-clock reliability and scalability that I’d only dreamed about.

Facing the Chaos

Around 2022, the marketing landscape began to transform into a maze of complexity. Paid media grew expensive and ineffective; organic social reach slowed; content saturation exploded; SEO is now shifting; and AI’s rise introduced both promise and frustration. I wasn’t alone—every marketer I knew was drowning in overwhelm.

AI initially left me skeptical. Chatbots felt lifeless, Salesforce’s Einstein was cumbersome, and Drift’s promises fell flat. AI was a buzzword—a tool of big brands with deep pockets. But everything changed in December 2022.

The Mediterranean Ice Cream Moment

One evening, as a playful challenge, I asked ChatGPT to invent a “Mediterranean ice cream” recipe—something that didn’t exist. Within seconds, it delivered: pistachios, honey, yogurt, olive oil, and sea salt. I stared at the screen, amazed. This wasn’t regurgitation; it was creation.

That small experiment changed everything. AI was no longer a gimmick—it was a partner that amplified my creativity. My journey pivoted from skeptic to advocate overnight.

All In on AI

In March 2023, I joined Element451, a CRM company fully embracing AI. Watching how their software could build marketing funnels effortlessly confirmed what I already knew: AI wasn’t just a trend; it was a revolution. By December 2023, I launched a podcast, diving deep into AI marketing, interviewing experts, testing tools, and developing frameworks.

The journey from frustration and skepticism to curiosity and conviction wasn’t straightforward. Each discovery was a step toward understanding AI’s true potential—not as a replacement for human creativity but as a catalyst for it.

Today, my mission is clear: Help marketers leverage AI to move faster, build better, and think smarter with AI.

Through my podcast, consulting, and courses, I’m equipping marketing leaders not just to keep pace but to lead the future of marketing.

Together, we’re not just navigating complexity—we’re conquering it.
